Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Calls for National Unity to Eradicate Tobacco Use

Islamabad, On World No Tobacco Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a call for collective action to eliminate tobacco use in Pakistan, emphasizing the need for collaboration across various sectors of society to combat this public health menace.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister stressed the theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day, “Protecting Children From Tobacco Industry Interference,” focusing on the importance of shielding the youth from the harmful influence of tobacco. He outlined the severe impact of tobacco on both users and those around them and noted Pakistan’s significant health burden related to tobacco consumption, which includes a wide range of serious diseases.

Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the government’s stringent anti-tobacco measures, such as implementing large-sized pictorial health warnings on tobacco packages, banning the sale of loose cigarettes, and increasing tobacco taxation to discourage consumption. He also pointed out that all forms of tobacco advertising and promotion are banned across the country.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that with concerted efforts, Pakistan can lay the foundation for a healthier and more prosperous future free from the harms of tobacco. He urged all stakeholders, including civil society, professional associations, NGOs, and the media, to unite in this critical health campaign.
