Punjab Police Deploys Over 43,000 Personnel for Muharram Security in Lahore and Province

Lahore: The Punjab Police has mobilized more than 43,000 officers and officials to ensure tight security for the first day of Muharram, covering 96 processions and 3,320 religious gatherings across the province, as per directives from the Inspector General.

According to Punjab Police, Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar outlined the comprehensive security measures implemented across all districts during the holy month of Muharram. This deployment includes over 3,000 personnel in Lahore alone, where 10 processions and 402 majalis were securely conducted.

Dr. Anwar emphasized that the police force is maintaining a high alert status throughout Muharram, with strict adherence to the Punjab Government’s enforcement of Section 144, which prohibits aerial firing, the display of weapons, and the dissemination of incendiary material. Moreover, all processions and gatherings are restricted to pre-designated routes and locations.

The security strategy includes extensive monitoring through the Safe Cities Authority’s camera network and coordination with district administrations. Community volunteers are also playing a crucial role in supporting the security efforts for both processions and majalis.

Special units such as the Counter-Terrorism Department, Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, and other field formations have been deployed specifically for Muharram security duties. Dr. Anwar has directed officers to rigorously enforce the Loudspeaker Act and to take legal action against those spreading hate material on social media. Additionally, control rooms established in each district are linked to a central control room at the Central Police Office to ensure seamless communication and monitoring of the security arrangements throughout the month.
