Lahore: Punjab Police has finalized extensive security measures for the upcoming Muharram observances, deploying over 215,000 officers and personnel to oversee more than 10,700 religious processions and over 38,000 majalis across the province.
According to Punjab Police, this year’s security strategy, detailed by Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, is designed to ensure peace during the holy month. The strategy encompasses Lahore, where more than 28,000 officers and personnel will be specifically stationed. The comprehensive security arrangement includes collaboration with Rangers, the Pakistan Army, and other government security institutions. Additionally, community engagement is significant, with over 66,000 volunteers participating in the security of majalis and over 45,000 in processions.
The security plan identifies 633 flashpoints across Punjab, with 283 in Lahore. Of these, 54 locations in Lahore are marked as extremely sensitive. Dr. Anwar highlighted that strict enforcement of Section 144, bans on aerial firing, weapon displays, hate speech, and incitement are priorities. The government has also banned double riding from the 7th to the 10th of Muharram to further ensure safety.
Dr. Anwar emphasized the importance of coordination with religious scholars, peace committees, and procession organizers, ensuring that all events adhere to designated routes and regulations, including the Loudspeaker Act. Control rooms have been established in all districts to maintain real-time monitoring and coordination with the central control room at the Central Police Office.
