Quetta Metropolitan Corporation Aims to Boost Income Through Enhanced Tax Collection Efforts

Quetta: A significant meeting chaired by Hamza Shafqat, Administrator of the Metropolitan Corporation Quetta and Commissioner of Quetta Division, focused on strategies to increase the corporation’s income through more effective tax collection and service provision. The meeting included discussions on balancing income and expenditure and improving taxation systems within the city.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Balochistan, the meeting’s agenda covered a range of fiscal strategies, including the expansion of the tax base, accurate compilation of tax data, and the integration of new taxpayers into the system. A decision was made to form a joint team comprising members from the Balochistan Revenue Authority (BRA) and the Metropolitan Corporation, tasked with conducting a comprehensive survey in Quetta. The goal is to compile complete data to enhance tax collection efficiency under a unified mechanism.

The implementation of the Urban Council Tax is expected to significantly accelerate property tax collection, thereby increasing the Metropolitan Corporation’s revenues. Shafqat emphasized the necessity of these reforms for the enhancement of Quetta’s infrastructure and services. He highlighted the planned improvements in the tax collection framework to ensure a balanced budget and reduce reliance on government funding. Additionally, the meeting addressed the systematic inclusion of all properties and businesses within the tax net and the updating of rental rates for properties owned by the Metropolitan Corporation to further boost income.

Shafqat also directed the incorporation of modern technology into the tax recovery system to enhance efficiency and stated that the Metropolitan Corporation’s financial sustainability heavily relies on property tax revenues. Various proposals were discussed to refine and stabilize the tax system, marking a pivotal step towards financial autonomy for the corporation.
