Rawalpindi Landslide Claims Life of FWO Personnel, Blocks Karakoram Highway

Rawalpindi, A devastating landslide on 4 April 2024 near Gonar Farm, Chillas, resulted in the blockage of the Karakoram Highway and subsequent rescue operations led to a tragic incident. A Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) team, responding to clear the debris and assist stranded travelers, faced another landslide, causing severe casualties among the personnel.

According to Inter Services Public Relations, the FWO detachment, under the command of Naib Subedar Khalid, was promptly dispatched to the landslide site. While engaged in clearance operations, an additional slide occurred, critically injuring the team members. Naib Subedar Khalid later died from his injuries on 6 April, while Sapper Waseem and Lance Naik Azmat are currently recovering from their serious injuries.

The incident has cast a somber shadow over the efforts to reopen the vital Karakoram Highway, highlighting the risks faced by rescue and recovery teams. The Pakistan Army and FWO’s commitment to overcoming natural disasters and aiding affected populations remains steadfast in the face of such challenges.
