Islamabad, Pakistan – On World Ocean Day, MNA Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, called for heightened global efforts to tackle ocean pollution and enhance marine conservation, particularly in support of communities dependent on marine ecosystems.
According to Press Information Department, Alam emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Ocean: Life and Livelihoods,” aligning closely with the experiences of Pakistan’s coastal communities. She highlighted successful initiatives such as the national mangroves restoration project, which has seen a 300% increase in mangroves since 1992, earning global acclaim for Pakistan’s conservation efforts.
The Coordinator outlined various government actions aimed at preserving marine biodiversity, combating pollution, and promoting sustainable fisheries. She pointed out the environmental challenges like plastic waste, which poses a severe threat to marine life and ocean health, with approximately 9.5 million tons of plastic dumped into the oceans annually.
Alam called on nations to collaborate more closely, implement effective policies, and adopt sustainable practices to safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations. She reaffirmed her government’s commitment to contributing positively to global marine preservation efforts.
