Senator Khalid Highlights BISP’s Role in Empowering Poor Women in Pakistan

Islamabad: Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, emphasized the significant impact of BISP on the empowerment of impoverished women across Pakistan during a media briefing at the BISP headquarters. Senator Khalid addressed the misconceptions surrounding the programme and announced new initiatives aimed at enhancing the socio-economic status of its beneficiaries.

According to Press Information Department, Senator Khalid stated that BISP, initiated by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and launched in 2008 by President Asif Ali Zardari, has been pivotal in acknowledging and supporting the underprivileged women of the nation. The program is designed to provide financial aid to help deserving individuals meet their basic needs and to facilitate economic empowerment through various initiatives, including the newly launched Benazir Skill Training Programme.

The Benazir Skill Training Programme, in collaboration with the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission and the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, aims to provide skill development opportunities aligned with international standards. This initiative is expected to enhance the capabilities of the beneficiaries, allowing them and their families to improve their living conditions and gain better employment opportunities.

Senator Khalid also highlighted the enhanced support for the residents of Balochistan, with the poverty score threshold for inclusion in education and nutrition programs in the region being raised significantly. She mentioned the introduction of a new banking model under the Kafaalat programme to ensure transparency and full payment to the women beneficiaries. This model divides the country into 15 clusters managed by 6 banks.

Secretary of BISP, Amer Ali Ahmad, provided additional details about the reach and scope of BISP’s efforts. He noted that the programme is currently assisting over 9.3 million families and has significantly contributed to the education of children and the health of mothers and children through the Taleemi Wazaif and Benazir Nashonuma programmes respectively. The BISP Savings Scheme and Digital and Financial Literacy programmes were also mentioned as key components of BISP’s strategy to foster self-sufficiency among participants.

The briefing concluded with a Q and A session where both the Chairperson and the Secretary engaged with media representatives, addressing concerns and discussing potential improvements to the programme. They also announced a comprehensive awareness campaign to disseminate accurate information and counteract any misinformation regarding BISP’s operations and benefits.
