Islamabad: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi commended Pakistan for its longstanding support of Afghan refugees during a meeting with Minister for States, Frontier Regions, Kashmir Affairs, and Gilgit Baltistan, Engineer Amir Muqam. The discussion highlighted the ongoing challenges and the potential for global collaboration in refugee support.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the appreciation from the UN’s top refugee official underscores the commitment of the Pakistani government and its people in hosting millions of Afghan refugees over the past four decades. This meeting set the stage for Pakistan’s special invitation to a global dialogue on refugees scheduled for October, which aims to enhance international support mechanisms.
During the encounter, Minister Muqam acknowledged the UNHCR’s enduring partnership and its critical role in assisting Afghan refugees in Pakistan, particularly in providing education, health care, and protection. Despite these efforts, Muqam raised concerns about the declining international support and funding for Afghan refugees in Pakistan, emphasizing the need for continued and enhanced global assistance.
The meeting was also attended by Philippa Candler, the UNHCR Representative in Pakistan, signifying the importance of collaborative efforts between Pakistan and the international community to address the refugee crisis.
