Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights taking notice of death threats to Journalist

Islamabad: The Honourable Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar has taken serious notice of a news item appearing in todays “The News” captioned “HAMID MIR REVEALS THREATS, BLAMES SECURITY ESTABLISHMENT” which reported the threats received by the prominent journalist and anchorperson of Geo News Mr. Hamid Mir.

The Advisor, while taking notice of this act, condemned it and expressed his concern over the threats to the senior journalist. The Advisor has written to the Minister for Interior to thoroughly investigate the matter so that the culprits can be brought to justice.

He has also urged to provide foolproof security to Mr. Hamid Mir so that any untoward incident can be avoided. The Advisor considers these threats as violation of fundamental rights of the citizens like the right to security of person (Article-9), the right to freedom of speech (Article-19) and the right to information (Article-19A). It is really tragic because Pakistan is already considered one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. Anymore incidents of violence against journalists will further tarnish the image of the country.
