Pakistan Spent Just 1.7% of GDP on Education in FY23

The cumulative education expenditures by federal and provincial governments in the fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23) are estimated at 1.77 percent of GDP, which is the lowest in the region.

The Economic Survey 2022-23 noted that expenditures on education-related activities during fiscal year 2022 witnessed an increase of 37.3 percent, and reached Rs. 1,101.7 billion from Rs. 802.2 billion.

According to Labor Force Survey 2020-21, literacy rate was 62.8 percent in 2020-21 as compared to 62.4 percent in 2018- 19, higher in males (increased from 73.0 percent in 2018-19 to 73.4 percent in 2020-21) than females (from 51.5 percent to 51.9 percent for the same period).

Area-wise analysis suggests literacy increased in both rural areas from 53.7 percent in 2018-19 to 54.0 percent in 2020-21, while in urban areas it increased from 76.1 percent in 2018-19 to 77.3 percent in 2020-21. The male-female disparity seems to be narrowing down over time. The literacy rate has gone up in all provinces, with Punjab (increased 66.1 percent to 66.3 percent), Sindh (61.6 percent to 61.8 percent), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (52.4 percent to 55.1 percent), and Balochistan (53.9 percent to 54.5 percent).

The literacy rate (10 years and older) is 60 percent, showing males as more literate than females. Punjab is at the top while Balochistan is at the bottom. Youth literacy (15-24 years) is 72 percent (Male: 79 percent and Female: 65 percent). The province-wise comparative situation is the same with higher disparities for females than males in youth literacy rates. The adult literacy rate is 57 percent (Male: 68 percent and Female: 46 percent) depicting that the adult male population is more literate than the adult female population.

Information Technology courses to be started at Governor House: Tessori

Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori says Information Technology courses would be started at Governor House to develop skills of our youth and enable them to meet the growing demand of the market.

Talking to media in Karachi on Tuesday, he said arranging IT courses at Governor House are aimed at controlling unemployment for which the process of registration has been started.

He said charity organizations like Saylani Welfare Trust and JDC have also been taken along on this issue.

He also called for serving the country, setting aside political considerations.

Govt focusing on quality education at grass root level: NA told

The National Assembly was informed today that the government is giving special emphasis on promotion of quality education at the grass-root level.

Responding to a calling attention notice, Minister for Federal Education Rana Tanveer Hussain assured to provide missing facilities at the public sector schools.

The session of the assembly was held in Islamabad on Tuesday with Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in the chair.

He said investment in the education sector is important to take the country forward on the path of development.

Parliamentary Secretary for Federal Education, Zeb Jaffer said several including School on Wheel and an accelerated learning program have been started.

Federal Minister Javed Latif has said those who orchestrated the May 9 violent acts should be arrested and tried under the laws.

Speaking in the National Assembly, he said the plotters should not be spared under any pressure.

He said the tiger force of PTI was especially trained to perpetrate violent acts.

In his remarks, Aslam Bhootani strongly condemned the May 9 violent acts saying those who were involved should be given exemplary punishment.

Taking the floor, Abdul Akbar Chitrali said the state institutions are an asset of the whole nation.

He said we express solidarity with the armed forces and pay tribute to their sacrifices for peace and stability in the country.

Two bills were laid before the House on Tuesday.

These included the Chairman and Speaker Salaries, Allowances and Privileges Amendment Bill, 2023 and the Constitution Amendment Bill (Amendment in Article 76).

The chair referred the bills to the standing committee concerned.

The chair also referred the International Institute of Technology, Culture and Health Sciences Bill, 2022 to the joint sitting of the parliament for consideration and passage.

The House has now been adjourned to meet again tomorrow at one pm.

Culprits involved in attacks to be brought to book: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the whole nation is sad over the recent heinous and grave violent attacks on state institutions in recent days.

He was talking during a visit to the Safe City Authority Head Office in Lahore on Saturday.

He said that May 9 is a sad day in the country's history as the historical Jinnah House was attacked by a PTI mob. He said that law will take its course and all culprits involved in the attack will be brought to the book. He said that PTi has done what our staunch enemy could not do.

He said that attacking the forces and their installations presented unprecedented sacrifices for the nation's sake. He said that martyrs and ghazi's memorials were demolished which is very sorrowful.

The Prime Minister said that he had chaired a meeting in Islamabad and ordered indiscriminate action against the planners, facilitators and attackers of this anti-state attack.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the Safe Cities Project is playing an important role in maintaining law and order.

He directed the concerned officials to nab all planners, facilitators and attackers on Jinnah House within seventy two hours. He said that cases against miscreants will be heard before the antiterrorist courts, which should work round the clock to give apt response to the anti-state elements.

Colleges and Universities in Punjab to Remain Closed on Thursday and Friday

All public sector colleges, universities and other educational institutions under the administrative control of Higher Education Department in Punjab will remain closed on May 11 and May 12 (Thursday and Friday).

In a notification, the Higher Education Department of the province said that the decision has been taken due to the prevailing security situation across Punjab.

Moreover, the papers of Secondary School First Annual Examination 2023 (Part-I) to be held on Thursday and Friday have also been postponed until further orders.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Interior Ministry approved army deployment in Punjab to address the deteriorating law and order situation earlier in the day.

Govt to ensure access of education to all: Ahsan

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal says the government is committed to ensure access of education to all underprivileged segments of the society.

Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad on Tuesday, he said access to higher education is key to development and progress of the country.

Expressing regret over the delay in carrying out educational projects by the previous government, the Minister said we are striving to revive the economic growth along with restoring development projects in health and education sector.

Criticizing the previous government of PTI, Ahsan Iqbal said the development projects including the flagship CPEC project that attracted biggest investment of country's history by our government in 2013 were dumped.

He said during our previous tenure, we were heading to bring investments in Special Economic Zones while the PTI government sabotaged all those development plans with a conspiracy under its corruption narrative that resulted in zero gain.

The Minister urged the students to acquire modern education that can help Pakistan achieve economic growth.

Ahsan Iqbal said we need to have creative minds to compete the world and for this purpose, we should seek motivation from our golden age when we ruled the world from Arab to Spain.
