Islamabad: In a significant move to boost the efficiency of Pakistan’s Customs operations, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Technology for People Initiative (TPI) of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The partnership is set to advance the use of machine learning and data analytics in streamlining customs processes and facilitating smoother cross-border trade.
According to Press Information Department, the MoU signing ceremony took place at the FBR headquarters and was attended by key officials from both FBR and LUMS. The agreement was inked by Mr. Muhammad Junaid Jalil Khan, Member Customs (Operations) from the FBR, and Dr. Muhammad Fareed Zaffar, Director of TPI-LUMS. This collaboration aims to minimize human intervention in customs processes, improve regulatory compliance, and enhance the efficacy of the Customs Risk Management System.
The initiative will also focus on developing the National Targeting Centre (NTC), which will profile and target entities involved in the movement of illicit goods using an ICT-based platform that facilitates information sharing globally. Chairman FBR, Mr. Rashid Mahmood Langrial, highlighted the importance of collaboration between public organizations and academic institutions in fostering knowledge transfer and creating homegrown solutions.
The partnership promises to leverage TPI-LUMS’ expertise in providing custom-made technological solutions to public sector organizations, enhancing transparency, accountability, and promoting a culture of research and evidence-based policymaking.
