Islamabad, In a pivotal step toward modernizing Pakistan’s tax system, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired a crucial meeting of the Steering Committee on the Digitalization of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) yesterday. The session marked significant strides towards enhancing the transparency and efficiency of tax administration in the country.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting saw the presence of key stakeholders including the Chairman of FBR, the CEO of Karandaaz Pakistan, Mr. Waqas ul Hasan, the Country Lead for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Syed Ali Mahmood, and other FBR representatives. The main agenda focused on reviewing the progress of FBR’s digital transformation efforts and discussing future enhancements to streamline tax operations nationwide.
During the meeting, the committee ratified a major proposal from the global consultancy firm McKinsey and Company for advancing the digitalization project. This decision came after a rigorous procurement process that included comprehensive technical evaluations by a committee of senior FBR officials and technical experts from Karandaaz Pakistan. McKinsey and Company were selected as the top bidder based on a meticulous assessment of technical and financial factors.
Minister Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s commitment to working collaboratively with the private sector and various stakeholders to push forward Pakistan’s transition to a modernized taxation framework. He highlighted that the digitalization of FBR is critical not only for boosting tax collection and administration but also for fostering sustainable economic growth.
The Finance Minister praised the Procurement Committee for their diligent work in selecting high-quality consulting services, crucial for this national project. He stressed the importance of a results-oriented approach that leverages existing digitalization expertise and prioritizes achieving early successful outcomes.
The session concluded with a consensus on the immediate commencement of the digitalization process, aiming to establish a digitally empowered tax ecosystem in Pakistan. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce bureaucratic hurdles and improve the ease of doing business, aligning with the government’s broader economic reform agenda.
