Islamabad, The National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA), in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Bahria University, commemorated World Environment Day with a focused seminar on the challenges facing Pakistan’s coastal communities. The event, held on June 4th, 2024, addressed critical issues such as coastal erosion, mangrove preservation, and ecosystem rehabilitation.

According to Press Information Department, the seminar featured a lineup of distinguished guests and experts, including Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, who attended as the chief guest. Other notable participants included the Norwegian Ambassador HE Per Albert Ilsaas, Sri Lankan Minister Mr. A. Christy Ruban, and representatives from various Pakistani and international environmental and educational institutions.

The theme of the event aligned with the United Nations’ focus for the year: “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” highlighting the global and local urgency of enhancing environmental safeguards and sustainable practices. During the seminar, experts and scholars discussed the detrimental effects of climate change on natural habitats and the necessary strategies to mitigate these impacts.

The event also included a Policy and Scientific Solution Competition involving students from renowned universities, which culminated in an awards ceremony where the winning participants received trophies. Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, in her concluding remarks, reaffirmed the Government of Pakistan’s commitment to environmental protection and the restoration of ecosystems, emphasizing the significance of such initiatives for future generations.
