Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced that Karachi Medical and Dental College has been elevated to the status of a university, fulfilling a long-standing promise by the Pakistan People’s Party. The announcement came during a ceremony where scholarships were distributed to fifty students of the newly established Karachi Metropolitan University.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the event was also an occasion to honor Iqbal Day, and was attended by Vice Chancellor Professor Wasim Qazi, Registrar Mahmood Khan, and various faculty members.
Mayor Wahab emphasized the need for collective efforts to improve the city and its educational institutions, urging teachers, staff, and students to take responsibility for the university’s success. He highlighted the importance of producing qualified doctors for society and expressed optimism that Karachi Metropolitan University could become one of the best in Pakistan. Reflecting on his own experiences as a student in Karachi, Wahab called for a return to the quality and reputation of the city’s educational institutions from the past.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Wasim Qazi shared plans to enhance the university’s infrastructure and international communication. An agreement between Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and the university is anticipated, which will include the development of a world-class gymnasium and a girls’ common room named in honor of Wahab’s mother, Ms. Fauzia Wahab.
