Islamabad: Senator Nayyar Bukhari, Leader of the House in Senate and Chairman of the Parliamentary Relief Committee in his keynote address to a policy dialogue on gendering disaster management, highlighted the government’s resolve to mainstream women and child concerns in disaster management. Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, while addressing the meeting gave the Government’s vision on gendering policies to benefit women as much as men. She also highlighted the special measures that should be focused while preparing gender policy in disaster management.
Gender and Child Cell (GCC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) organized the dialogue. The dialogue is aimed at preparing a gender policy to mainstream concerns of women in Disaster Management in Pakistan.
Representatives of civil society, multilateral and bilateral international development partners, academia, national and international non-governmental organizations and representatives of various government agencies attended the dialogue.
Ms. Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General on Disaster Risk Reduction also attended the dialogue and shared international best practices and experiences with the participants of the meeting. Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir, Chairman, NDMA shared the achievements of NDMA in mainstreaming gender concerns within disaster management processes.
