Pakistan Accelerates Privatization of Electricity Distribution Amid Calls for Transparency

Islamabad: The Pakistani government has intensified efforts to privatize its Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), with preliminary steps including international advertising campaigns initiated on August 17. This push was detailed in a high-level meeting co-chaired by Federal Minister for Privatization, Board of Investment and Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, and Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari.

According to Press Information Department, during the meeting, Minister Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized the necessity of executing the privatization process in phases, focusing on maintaining transparency and addressing technical considerations thoroughly. Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Laghari directed expedited resolution of pertinent issues and facilitated access to institutional data for potential investors.

The privatization schedule for DISCOs has been drafted and is awaiting final approval from both the Cabinet Committee and the Federal Government. The meeting also covered the appointment of a Financial Advisor, market assessments, and restructuring strategies essential for the privatization initiative.

Additionally, in a related session of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Communications, Minister Abdul Aleem Khan discussed challenges within the transportation sector, including vehicular pressure on roads. He proposed enhancements to the National Highway and Communication Departments to unlock profitability and revenue-generation potential, such as modernizing the Axle Load Control System and better leveraging the toll tax system.

These discussions reflect the government’s broader strategy to streamline operations and improve fiscal health through privatization and efficient management of public assets.
