Islamabad: The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, announced today that the government is taking definitive steps towards the privatization of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and addressing electricity pilferage, as part of a broader strategy to provide relief to electricity consumers.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in a press briefing in Islamabad, Minister Tarar detailed several measures aimed at reducing electricity costs for consumers. These include a significant subsidy of 50 billion rupees granted to users consuming up to 200 units of electricity, which was reallocated from the development budget to aid in lowering electricity bills.
Further, the Punjab government has set aside an additional 45 billion rupees from its funds to extend subsidies to those using between 201 to 500 units of electricity. Minister Tarar emphasized that these efforts reflect the government’s top priority under the PML-N leadership to ease the financial burden on the public and should be viewed positively rather than criticized.
The Minister also noted other economic relief measures, such as the reduction in petroleum product prices and a notable decrease in the inflation rate from 23% to 11%, illustrating the government’s commitment to stabilizing the economy and reducing living costs.
