Pakistan and Canada Hold 5th Round of Bilateral Political Consultations in Ottawa

Ottawa, Pakistan and Canada held their 5th Round of Bilateral Political Consultations on April 26, 2024, in Ottawa. The meeting brought together representatives from both countries to review the state of their bilateral relations and discuss avenues for further collaboration in various sectors.

According to Press Information Department, the Pakistan delegation was led by Ambassador Mariam Aftab, Additional Foreign Secretary (Americas), while the Canadian delegation was headed by Assistant Deputy Minister (Indo-Pacific) Weldon Epp of Global Affairs Canada. The talks covered a wide range of topics, including trade, investment, education, parliamentary exchanges, counterterrorism, and people-to-people contacts.

Ambassador Mariam Aftab briefed the Canadian delegation on Pakistan’s foreign policy priorities and invited Canadian companies to invest in Pakistan’s energy, mining, and IT sectors. Both sides also discussed their mutual collaboration at international fora such as the United Nations and expressed satisfaction with the overall progress in bilateral relations. They agreed to further deepen cooperation and work together on issues of common interest.

The Canadian side was informed about recent developments in the South Asian region, with a focus on Afghanistan, Pakistan-India relations, and human rights violations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The two sides also discussed the importance of maintaining a stable and peaceful regional environment.

The next round of Bilateral Political Consultations between Pakistan and Canada is scheduled to take place in Islamabad at mutually agreed-upon dates. The ongoing discussions reflect the commitment of both countries to enhance their partnership and strengthen cooperation in multiple areas.
