Pakistan Approves Sugar Export to Tajikistan Amidst Surplus

Islamabad: The Sugar Advisory Board (SAB), led by Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, has recommended the export of 40,000 metric tons of sugar to Tajikistan, in a bid to manage surplus stocks and support the local sugar industry.

According to Press Information Department, the decision was made during a meeting that included various stakeholders such as the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, provincial cane commissioners, and officials from the Federal Board of Revenue. The current sugar stock in the country stands at 2.852 million metric tons, which is deemed sufficient to meet domestic demand. With an identified surplus of approximately 1.5 million metric tons, the export proposal aims to help the sugar industry generate revenue and fulfill financial obligations to growers. The Trade Corporation of Pakistan will handle the export arrangements pending approval from the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet.

Additionally, the meeting addressed concerns about sugar pricing, with the industry representatives clarifying that recent retail price fluctuations are not linked to changes in mill rates. The Minister urged provincial authorities to enforce measures against hoarding to stabilize prices.
