Pakistan Awaits Election Results for UN Security Council Seat

Islamabad, Today, the United Nations General Assembly is set to elect five new non-permanent members to the Security Council, including Pakistan, for the term beginning January 1, 2025. Pakistan is among the candidates expected to secure a seat following its endorsement by the 53-member Asian Group.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, if elected, this would mark Pakistan’s eighth term on the UN Security Council. The election involves replacing current non-permanent members Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms conclude at the end of this year. The Security Council, responsible for maintaining international peace and security, includes five permanent and ten non-permanent members, with the latter elected for two-year terms. Pakistan’s potential election is seen as a significant opportunity to further contribute to international diplomacy and peacekeeping efforts.
