United Nations: Pakistan has reiterated its strong support for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, emphasizing its commitment to assisting the people and government of the conflict-torn nation.
According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the resolve was expressed by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, during a briefing at the UN Security Council. The ambassador highlighted the need for a clear, actionable, and financially supported roadmap to address outstanding issues, such as the unification of forces, transitional security arrangements, and the constitution-making process.
Acknowledging the decision to extend South Sudan’s transition period by two years, with elections now planned for December 2026, Ambassador Akram stressed the importance of using this extension to ensure a credible electoral process. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for timely and transparent elections in the country.
The Pakistani envoy also praised the dedication and sacrifices of the UN Mission in South Sudan’s peacekeepers, who continue to work towards peace, stability, and development in the region. He called on the South Sudanese government to fully cooperate with the UN mission, particularly concerning deployment requests and operational challenges. This includes addressing the pending request for additional forces and concerns over the partial vacation of the Mission Headquarters.
