Islamabad: Pakistan is seeking technical support from Germany to enhance its climate action plans and accelerate the transition to clean energy. This was discussed during a meeting between Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, and a German delegation led by Christiane Amari from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
According to a statement by Press Information Department, the discussions highlighted the need for strengthened bilateral cooperation on climate change and sustainable development. Topics included ongoing and future initiatives to protect the environment and mitigate the effects of climate change, with a focus on innovative solutions to combat climate-related challenges such as floods and droughts.
Ms. Alam emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing climate change, especially for countries like Pakistan that are uniquely vulnerable due to geographical and socio-economic factors. She reiterated the government’s commitment to the National Climate Change Policy and the Pakistan Climate Change Act, aligning with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Christiane Amari expressed Germany’s support for Pakistan’s climate objectives and praised the country’s proactive stance on environmental protection. She stressed the importance of cooperation in tackling the climate crisis through shared knowledge, technology, and financial resources. “Integrating climate change adaptation into national development policies is paramount,” Ms. Amari noted.
The discussion also covered potential partnerships in water management, clean energy, carbon reduction, and global climate risk financing. Both parties expressed optimism about their collaborative efforts to meet global climate targets and improve the livelihoods of those most affected by climate change.
Ahmed Atteeq Anwar, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Climate Change, joined the meeting, advocating for increased climate awareness among the younger generation through educational initiatives. Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change, highlighted investment opportunities in Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly in green skills, and the potential role of German private companies in advancing climate adaptation and nature-based solutions.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to ongoing dialogue and collaboration to bolster Pakistan’s climate resilience and sustainable development initiatives.
