Pakistan’s Chief Justice Launches Judicial Modernization

Islamabad: The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Yahya Afridi, has introduced significant reforms aimed at modernizing the judiciary to enhance efficiency and ensure greater accessibility for litigants. The reforms include the integration of advanced information technology systems and the establishment of committees to oversee key appointments.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the reforms are part of a broader initiative to make the justice system more citizen-focused. Among the technological advancements introduced is the e-Affidavit system, which is designed to streamline the filing process and reduce delays. Additionally, a new Case Management System has been implemented to allow litigants and lawyers to access certified case copies instantly, eliminating traditional delays.

To foster transparency and build public trust, feedback mechanisms involving legal practitioners, litigants, and civil society have been established. Chief Justice Afridi has also visited remote and underserved districts to understand grassroots challenges and address resource gaps, thereby promoting equitable access to justice.

In terms of appointments, Chief Justice Afridi has set up committees comprised of senior judges and the Attorney General of Pakistan to oversee the selection for key judicial positions. These committees will interview candidates nominated by provincial Chief Secretaries and Chief Justices of the High Courts, ensuring that selections are based on merit and transparency.
