Pakistan’s Climate Change Committee Calls for Unified National Effort

Islamabad, The Prime Minister’s coordinator on climate change, in the first meeting of the Advisory Committee on Climate Change, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts across various sectors to address the national climate crisis effectively. The meeting brought together stakeholders from government, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to forge a united front against environmental challenges.

According to Press Information Department, the committee includes members from the Special Investment Facilitation Council, Ministry of Federal Education, Higher Education Commission, COMSATS, PM Youth Program, IRS, SDPI, Planning Commission, Ministry of Power, and representatives from NGOs, CSOs, private universities, and the banking sector. During the meeting, a decision was made to create a dashboard for climate-related data collection spearheaded by the Ministry of Climate Change. The committee praised the initiative to unite all stakeholders and discussed strategies to enhance climate literacy, security, waste management, and empowerment.

The meeting also highlighted specific measures such as banning plastic use in educational institutions and events, promoting kitchen gardening, and integrating climate change into the national curriculum. Proposals included the introduction of electric bikes, revival of cycling culture, and the use of cement blocks to replace traditional brick kilns. The PM’s coordinator expressed her commitment to changing the international perception of Pakistan as a ‘graveyard of wastes’ and transforming it into a leading example of environmental stewardship.
