Pakistan’s Power Minister Promises Aid to Textile Industry Facing Export Slump

Karachi, Pakistan’s Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari, has pledged substantial governmental support to the struggling textile sector, following concerns over declining exports and the resultant socio-economic challenges. Meeting with representatives from the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), Laghari outlined initiatives aimed at revitalizing this key industry, including the adoption of a wheeling policy and competitive tariff structures to bolster export performance.

According to Press Information Department, during the meeting held on April 3, 2024, APTMA officials voiced the pressing issues of unemployment and poverty, exacerbated by falling export figures in the textile sector. Minister Laghari responded with assurances of the government’s focused intervention to stimulate growth and sustainability within the industry. He detailed the government’s plans to implement policies that would facilitate an increase in exports, projecting a potential $2 billion rise in revenue.

Further emphasizing the government’s proactive measures, Laghari discussed enhancing the efficiency of Distribution Companies (DISCOS) to provide immediate and significant relief to the textile sector. These efforts demonstrate the government’s dedication to addressing the immediate needs of the textile industry and its broader commitment to economic stability and growth.
