Prime Minister Sharif Urges Swift Resolution of Revenue-Related Legal Cases

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for the prompt resolution of all revenue-related legal cases, emphasizing the need for efficient legal representation and comprehensive audits. In a recent meeting focused on expediting the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) legal cases, he outlined a series of measures aimed at streamlining the process.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister instructed the FBR to enlist reputable lawyers to handle tax revenue-related cases. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the FBR system, noting that these reforms are beginning to show positive outcomes. Additionally, Sharif mandated a forensic audit of the current revenue-related cases to ensure transparency and accountability.

Prime Minister Sharif underscored the importance of integrity in case management, stating that officers responsible for initiating cases on weak or incorrect grounds would face disciplinary action. Conversely, he proposed that officers demonstrating merit and diligence in their work should receive special recognition and rewards.

During the meeting, officials reported that the Prime Minister’s directive had already resulted in the resolution of 586 cases in the High Court and 637 cases in the Supreme Court between July and December of the previous year. Despite these advancements, a substantial backlog remains, with 33,522 cases valued at 4.7 trillion rupees still pending in various courts and tribunals nationwide.

The meeting also revealed the development of a litigation management dashboard for higher courts within the FBR, aligning with the Prime Minister’s instructions. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Law and Justice is nearing the completion of a tax tribunals management system, expected to be launched shortly.
