Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has increased the federal government’s wheat procurement target from 1.4 million metric tons to 1.8 million metric tons, a significant step aimed at supporting farmers. The announcement was made prior to the Prime Minister’s departure to Saudi Arabia, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of the agricultural sector.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister instructed the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASCO) to adjust the procurement target and ensure immediate action to meet the new goal. Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of transparency and the convenience of farmers in the wheat procurement process.
The decision to increase the wheat procurement target follows reports of challenges faced by farmers, indicating the government’s responsiveness to the needs of the agricultural community. By prioritizing increased procurement, the government aims to provide farmers with a stable market for their produce and support the country’s food security.
This move is expected to bolster confidence among wheat producers and enhance the government’s ability to manage the country’s wheat reserves, ultimately contributing to a more robust agricultural sector.
