Karachi: The Sindh Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, is advancing into the second phase of the Sindh Flood Emergency Rehabilitation Program (SFERP), focusing on the restoration of infrastructure and enhancement of rescue services, following the destructive monsoon season of 2022. This initiative was discussed in detail during the Pre-Central Development Working Party (CDWP) meeting held by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives.
According to Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, the meeting chaired by Member-Infrastructure and Regional Connectivity, Waqas Anwar, evaluated the ongoing efforts and future steps of the SFERP. The project, initially endorsed by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council in December 2022, boasts a total funding of approximately Rs 66 billion (US$ 300 million) and aims to conclude technically in just 1.5 years, half the time initially planned. This rapid progression underscores the effective management and commitment of the Sindh Government and its partners.
The discussion highlighted the achievements under SFERP-I, where ten districts received new Rescue-1122 buildings modeled after Punjab’s emergency infrastructure. Future plans include expanding road rehabilitation and emergency services across additional districts, underpinned by substantial investment from the World Bank. Questions about the coverage of rescue services and the quality of infrastructure compared to other provinces were addressed, emphasizing the high standards maintained in Sindh’s projects.
The meeting also set the stage for further approval processes, with the Pre-CDWP recommending the project for consideration by the Central Development Working Party, pending comments from the Economic Affairs Division.
