UN Warns of Population Surge in Pakistan, Predicting Overwhelming Challenges by 2092

Islamabad: The United Nations has issued a warning about the rapidly increasing population of Pakistan, forecasting significant challenges in water, sanitation, unemployment, and healthcare systems if current growth trends continue.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UN’s World Population Prospects 2024 report predicts that Pakistan will reach a peak population of 404.68 million by the year 2092. The report also anticipates that Pakistan’s population will surpass that of Indonesia in 2048, reaching 331.29 million, marking a critical demographic shift.

The growth rate of approximately 2.1 percent is notably higher than other countries in the region, which could place immense pressure on the country’s infrastructure and essential services. The potential consequences include severe strains on water and sanitation systems, a rise in unemployment, and overwhelming demands on health and education systems, necessitating urgent and effective policy responses to mitigate these challenges.
