Visit of Chief Justice of Pakistan to Canada

Islamabad, May 24, 2014 (PPI-OT): On the invitation of the Government of Canada, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani visited Canada from 20th to 22nd May 2014. It was for the first time that the Chief Justice of a country has been invited by the Government of Canada on an official visit.

The essential purpose of the visit was to take forward the activities of the Working Party on Mediation (the Malta Process). Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussian Jillani is the co-Chair of the Working Party which is also co-chaired by Canada.

During his visit the Hon’ble Chief Justice called upon the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin Chief Justice of Canada. The two Chief Justices exchanged in detail views on issues of mutual interest and to enhance two way collaboration. The Hon’ble Chief Justice Mr. Justice Jillani delivered a speech on the ‘Role of Judiciary in the Socio-Economic Development of Pakistan’.

The Hon’ble Chief Justice visited the Parliament Hill where he was conducted by Senator Salma Attaullah Jan, who hosted a lunch in his lordship’s honour with important dignitaries. The Hon’ble Chief Justice also made a presentation on “the Judiciary as a Catalyst for Social Change” at the University of Ottawa. The presentation was attended by Ambassadors, faculty members, civil servants and students of the faculty of law.

In the last leg of his visit the Hon’ble Chief Justice visited the Court of Appeals at Montreal where he was greeted by the Chief Justice of Quebec, Honourable Nicole Duval Hesler. Chief Justice of Quebec also hosted a lunch in the honour of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan.

The Chief Justice also held important meetings with Judges of the Quebec Court of Appeal. He also made a presentation on “the Role of Judiciary in Promotion of a Culture of Tolerance” in an event which was co-chaired by Justice Chamberland of the Quebec Court of Appeal and President of the Montreal Bar Association Mr. Craig More.

The Hon’ble Chief Justice’s visit generated considerable interest in Canada. During the visit the Pakistan Judiciary was greatly lauded for its role in upholding the rule of law and in protecting the rights of the minorities in Pakistan.
