Balochistan Faces $1.6 Billion in Climate Change Damages, Minister Calls for International Support

Quetta, Balochistan Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti highlighted the severe impact of climate change on Balochistan, reporting significant damages and inadequate international financial support during a provincial meeting on climate policy.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Balochistan, Minister Bugti disclosed during a video-linked meeting chaired by Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif that recent climate-related disasters in Balochistan resulted in losses amounting to $1.6 billion. Despite international promises of $2.6 billion for rehabilitation, these commitments have largely been unmet. The meeting, which also included Chief Minister Balochistan’s Principal Secretary Imran Zarkun and Secretary Environment Nadeem Khan, emphasized the urgent need for a cohesive national policy on climate change. This policy would integrate the needs and feedback of all provinces to ensure effective decision-making and resource allocation tailored to regional requirements.

Minister Bugti affirmed Balochistan’s commitment to adhere to agreed guidelines and to work collaboratively to address the challenges posed by climate change.
