Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Communications, Privatization and Board of Investment, Abdul Aleem Khan, has directed the implementation of significant measures to enhance safety and rescue operations on Pakistan’s motorways and GT Road. This initiative includes the innovative use of helicopters for rapid medical response alongside traditional emergency services.
According to Press Information Department, during a high-level meeting at the National Highway Authority (NHA) headquarters in Islamabad, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for efficient accident response systems to save lives. The plan includes daily monitoring of accident data and improving rapid transport of injured passengers to medical facilities via helicopter, working in conjunction with existing ground services like 1122.
The meeting saw key inputs from Federal Secretary Communications Ali Sher Mehsud and NHA Chairman Shehryar Sultan, who briefed the minister on ongoing improvements and operational strategies for the roadways. Abdul Aleem Khan called for both immediate and long-term policy measures to make the motorways and GT roads safer. He also stressed the importance of financial sustainability in the NHA’s operations, urging the authority to prioritize feasible projects and avoid wasteful expenditures.
Furthermore, the Minister tasked the NHA with crafting a National Transport Policy and ensuring that trucks on the highways adhere to video surveillance standards and axle load regulations. A stringent freight and logistics policy was also mandated to prevent lapses in enforcement and accountability.
The directives from Abdul Aleem Khan are part of a broader initiative aimed at not only improving highway safety but also enhancing the financial management and operational efficiency of the National Highway Authority.
