Government to Import 200,000 Metric Tonnes of Urea to Secure Supply for Farmers

Islamabad, The Pakistani government has announced plans to import 200,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer to ensure a stable supply for the nation’s farmers. This decision aims to address the ongoing challenges within the fertilizer supply chain and maintain affordability.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister for Industries and Production, and National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain confirmed the import during a high-level committee meeting he chaired, which reviewed the actions taken regarding the fertilizer supply chain and pricing. The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to halting fertilizer smuggling and ensuring that urea is distributed equally and at affordable prices across all regions.

The meeting highlighted several key government strategies, including stringent measures against black marketing and the strict monitoring of fertilizer companies and dealers to ensure compliance with pricing regulations. Minister Hussain also called on provincial governments to support these federal initiatives actively and oversee local fertilizer distributors and dealers more rigorously.

In his remarks, Minister Hussain reiterated the government’s dedication to protecting farmers’ interests and preventing exploitation by the fertilizer mafia. He stressed that any negligence in providing fertilizers to farmers would not be tolerated, underlining a commitment to transparency and fairness in the agricultural sector.
