NDMA Hosts Seminar on Climate and Disaster Risk Financing

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan held a significant seminar at the National University of Technology (NUTECH) focusing on Climate and Disaster Risk Financing, with the aim of bolstering the nation’s preparedness and response to climate-induced disasters.

According to Press Information Department, the seminar assembled a diverse group of experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to delve into strategies for enhancing Pakistan’s financial readiness against poly-disasters and related emergencies. Discussions revolved around creating a robust framework for anticipatory actions and efficient post-disaster reconstruction utilizing local materials and expertise.

The event featured prominent figures such as Lt Gen Imam Haider Malik, Chairman of NDMA, and Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, PM Coordinator on Climate Change. Contributions also came from international experts like Mr. Samuel Rizk from UNDP, Mr. Arup Chatterjee from ADB via video link, and other notable personalities from various organizations involved in disaster risk reduction.

Key topics included the development of Pakistan-specific templates for disaster-impacted sectors and the integration of global best practices to mitigate risks effectively. The seminar also set the stage for Pakistan to demonstrate regional leadership in the upcoming COP 29 in Azerbaijan, aiming to enhance advocacy for climate and disaster risk finance and its incorporation into national planning.

The gathering drew attendance from government officials, ambassadors, UN agency representatives, development partners, humanitarian organizations, academia, disaster response experts, media, tech professionals, and youth, all committed to strengthening disaster risk reduction and resilience as integral elements of sustainable development.
