Islamabad: Pakistan and India exchanged lists of nuclear installations and facilities as well as prisoners held in each other’s custody today. The exchange of nuclear information follows the Agreement on Prohibition of Attacks against Nuclear Installations and Facilities, signed by both nations on December 31, 1988. This agreement mandates the annual exchange of nuclear facility lists on January 1, a practice that has been in place since 1992.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the nuclear lists were handed over simultaneously in Islamabad and New Delhi. A representative of the Indian High Commission received Pakistan’s list at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, while a representative of the Pakistan High Commission received India’s list from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
In addition to the nuclear exchange, both nations also shared lists of prisoners under the Consular Access Agreement of 2008. This agreement requires the exchange of prisoner lists biannually on January 1 and July 1. Pakistan provided India with a list of 266 Indian prisoners, consisting of 49 civilians and 217 fishermen. In return, India provided a list of 462 Pakistani prisoners, including 381 civilians and 81 fishermen.
The Government of Pakistan has called on India to release and repatriate Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences and whose national status is confirmed. In particular, 52 civilian prisoners and 56 fishermen are awaiting repatriation, having served their time in Indian jails. Additionally, a request has been made by Pakistan for consular access to 38 missing defense personnel from the 1965 and 1971 wars.
