Pakistan and UNHCR Collaborate to Address Afghan Refugee Situation

Islamabad: In a significant development aimed at addressing the long-standing issue of Afghan refugees, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, engaged in a telephonic conversation with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The discussion focused on enhancing Pakistan-UNHCR cooperation and finding lasting solutions for Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the conversation also covered recent disturbances involving the Afghani diaspora, which included attacks and violent demonstrations at Pakistan’s Diplomatic Missions in Frankfurt, London, and Brussels. These incidents underscore the complex dynamics surrounding the Afghan refugee issue and the broader regional implications.

The High Commissioner acknowledged Pakistan’s enduring hospitality towards Afghan refugees, particularly noting the recent government decision to extend the validity of the Proof of Registration Card, which allows Afghan refugees to legally stay in Pakistan. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration between Pakistan and the UNHCR, aiming to secure sustainable and dignified solutions for the refugees.
