Pakistan Commits to Environmental Sustainability on World Environment Day

Islamabad, Today marks World Environment Day, and Pakistan is taking the opportunity to address its significant environmental challenges, including land degradation, desertification, and drought. President Asif Ali Zardari has emphasized Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change and its commitment to pioneering sustainable solutions.

According to Press Information Department, President Zardari’s message highlighted the dire environmental issues that Pakistan has experienced in recent years, such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, and forest fires. On World Environment Day, the focus is on restoring land, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience, reflecting the urgency of these issues for Pakistan.

The President pointed to initiatives like the Green Pakistan Programme, which aims at afforestation and ecosystem restoration, as evidence of Pakistan’s dedication to environmental sustainability. Further efforts include the National Adaptation Plan and Climate Smart Agriculture, which demonstrate the country’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and land degradation mitigation.

Moreover, the President urged federal and provincial departments and local communities to collaborate more closely to manage water resources effectively, restore pastures, and increase the water-holding capacity of soils through increased tree planting.

President Zardari concluded by reasserting Pakistan’s focus on climate adaptation and mitigation as essential for ensuring the nation’s sustainability. He called on citizens to reaffirm their commitment to protecting the environment, aiming to secure a healthier, safer, and more resilient planet for future generations.
