Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari has called for international cooperation to combat the adverse effects of climate change, a call he made while meeting with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during the discussions, President Zardari stressed the importance of adopting environmentally friendly technologies, promoting afforestation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. He noted the specific challenges faced by Pakistan, including glacier melt and water scarcity, which are exacerbated by global warming.
The President welcomed the Azerbaijani delegation, congratulating them on their successful bid to host COP 29 in Baku and discussing the potential for setting a new collective quantified goal on finance to aid developing countries. He showcased Pakistan’s efforts in environmental protection, such as the extensive planting of mangrove forests, which not only help safeguard the environment but also generate carbon credits.
The talks also touched on enhancing bilateral relations, especially in tourism and culture, reflecting both nations’ desire to strengthen ties. President Zardari accepted an invitation to attend COP 29, expressing hopes for Azerbaijan’s leadership in championing the needs of developing nations in climate finance.
