Prime Minister Orders Inquiry into Unnecessary Wheat Imports

Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an inquiry into the import of wheat, despite the country having sufficient reserves, as per Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanvir Hussain. The Minister made this announcement while responding to points raised by lawmakers in the National Assembly.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Minister explained that the inquiry was prompted by the caretaker government’s decision to import wheat, despite a carry-forward stock of 4.1 million tons in the country. Rana Tanvir Hussain noted that this unnecessary import disrupted provincial procurement targets for wheat. He emphasized that agriculture is a devolved subject, and each province procures wheat as per its targets.

He further clarified that all provincial governments typically procure 25 percent of the total wheat production. However, due to the carry-forward stock, provinces are finding it challenging to meet their procurement targets. To address this, the Minister has written letters to provincial chief ministers, urging them to start procurement immediately and enhance their wheat targets.

Rana Tanvir Hussain assured the National Assembly that the government is making all efforts to prevent losses for farmers. He also mentioned that the Prime Minister is focusing on a targeted subsidy to support farmers and ensure a stable fertilizer supply and pricing for the next crop season.

In response to questions from lawmakers, the Minister stated that a historic relief package will be announced in the upcoming budget to support small farmers. The announcement of the relief package and the inquiry into wheat imports reflect the government’s efforts to stabilize the agricultural sector and address disruptions caused by the recent imports.

The National Assembly was adjourned to meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m.
